Sherlock Holmes e il Caso della Crema Idratante... (1/2) - Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Moisturizing Cream... (1/2)

In realtà gliela mettiamo su piedi e gambe dopo averli lavati...
" Uhm... Non so... Ho paura... E se cado? Se viene anche Lori, forse... "
" No, no, e chi ce la fa? Lori mi sostiene, sta qui apposta! Lei sa come farmi camminare! "
" E per quanto riguarda il suo sesso? "
" In realtà...
" Oh... A vederla così sembra una cosa tanto semplice! "
La ragazza sorrise e, arrossendo, disse:
" Sì... Grazie... Li ho fatti io a mano! "
" Ma bene! Lei lavora... La ceramica? "
" Oh, no, è Fimo, una pasta sintetica. "
" Ed è molto che la utilizza? "
" Oppure? "
" Mah, no, non saprei... "

... Continua...

It was a warm April of 2011, me and my friend Holmes decided to leave for a while Baker Street and our occupations to have a short holiday to Italy.
But once we arrived in Rome my hopes for a relaxing stay broke, for a curious thing happened, one night, in a little flat in the north suburbs of the city and, once again, I couldn't do anything to stop the investigative curiosity of my roommate.
In fact the case seemed interesting, soon I was conquered by its strangeness too and I was involved in that adventure that, without a doubt, I must define as the oddest we ever took part in.
No theft, no kidnapping, no murder, no real crime was committed and maybe for this very reason it was worth studying the question in its details.
So me and my friend managed to knock at the old door of the little flat where the mysterious event happened. We were welcomed by a girl in her thirty, thin, but athletic, with dark eyes and dark hair too, tied up in a long pony tail.
" Good morning, I'm Sherlock Holmes and this is my friend and colleague doctor Watson. "
" Good morning, we've been expecting you, we just received the telegram in which told us you were coming here. Pray, come in... "
The young lady led us the dining room, where nearly the whole family was waiting for us.
" Good morning Mr Holmes, I'm Mrs Mirella. Your reputation precedes you, I hope you can help us to bring some light to what happened. "
" Of course, but I need you to expose the facts to me exactly how they happened, without omitting any detail. "
" Sure, sure, even if there's not much to say really... Here, look at this... "
The woman pointed us an old plastic jar, badly covered with a brown packaging adhesive tape.
" Until yesterday there was a white plastic jar, with a new and still shining cover, instead of that horrible thing. We always kept it on this cabinet, next the sofa, where usually my mother, Mrs Clara sits. here's a valuable moisturizing cream. "
" I understand. Tell me, Mrs Mirella, does your mother often use this cream? " said Holmes, examining the content of the jar.
" In a way... We put it on her feet and legs after we washed them... Just like we were doing this morning, when me and Lori noticed the jar was different. "
" You mean it's you and Lori who spread it on her? "
" Yes, you see, over a year ago my mother broke her leg and now, even if she recovered, she can't move well like she did then... "
My companion bent on the floor, just in front of the lively elderly woman who, despite her age, still looked so full of energy.
" Mrs Clara, would you like to take a little walk? Weather is nice today and, as you can see, there's nothing that's worth watchig on TV. "
" Uhm... I don't know... I'm afraid... What if I fall? Maybe, if Lori comes with us too... "
" Oh, you don't feel like coming alone? "
" No, no, I couldn't do that! Lori supports me, that's her job! She knows how to make me walk! "
Holmes turned towards the girl who opened us the door.
" I'm Lori " she said " I take care of Mrs Clara. She could walk alone, but fear stops her and we prefer to not allow her to walk on her own, without someone next to her, cos if she falls again... Uh, better not to think about it! "
" She never ever walks alone? "
" No, just when the therapist comes here, cos he's a doctor and he knows how far he can go anyway... "
" I see. So the original jar was still here yesterday night, while this morning you found this 'substitute' . Mrs Mirella, now that Lori lives with you all, how did you organised the beds? I saw you have just two real bedrooms... "
I couldn't understand how that could help us in finding who exchanged the jars. I knew detection methods of my friend were more than valid, based upon prudent observations and deductions, always revealed to be exact and sometimes even too obvious to be recognised as fundamental. But now I wasn't really able to imagine how Holmes could solve the matter and indicate the 'culprit' , focusing on the distribution of the beds in the house.

" Lori sleeps with my mother in the little bedroom, while my daughter Uapa moved in my bedroom to sleep. Oh, and when he's not out to work, my husband Ezio sleeps here in the dining room, on the sofa. You know we all had to settle down with that... "
" And what about your cat? Where does she sleep? "
" How do you know we have a cat and that it's a she?! We couldn't see her around at all today! "
" I deduce you have a cat by all those little balls of silver foil lying in that corner, behind the sofa. Too strange a game for a baby and the passage is too tight for a dog, even a little one, to put them there. "
" And how can you tell it's a she-cat? "
" Actually... I must confess mine was just a supposition, but you confirmed that immediately. That little trace of sand on the cabin helped me. It confirmed the hypothesis it was a cat, cos few dogs use a litter tray and that particular sand can't be found anywhere around here, to be carried in the house by a dog's paws. Its size made me think of a medium-little animal, maybe slightly overweighted, but not provided of a heavy bone and muscles structure, such as that of a male subject. "
I could understand Holmes' amusement in surprising his clients with these little demonstrations of his great observation skills, which surprised me too several times.
" Oh... Looking at it this way it seems so simple! "
" It is! And tell me, could the cat walk here during the night? "
" No, she sleeps with us. Sorry if I didn't introduce myself earlier, Mr Holmes, I'm Uapa. At night we always close the door of the dining room to avoid Birba from eating the flowers we keep in the vases. And when dad doesn't sleep here, like in these days, we leave the window open to have fresh air in the room. It's a routine: I turn off the computer, open the window and close the door. "
" Right. Oh such original earrings, Miss Uapa, look Watson, they have the shape of a cake! "
The girl smiled and she said, blushing:
" Yes, thank you... I made them with my hands! "
" Oh, good! Do you work with... Ceramic? "
" Oh, no, it's Fimo, a polymeric clay. "
" Is it a long time you use it? "
" Well, yes, some years... Actually I started using it again some days ago, after a quite long pause... When you miss inspiration...! "
" Right, right... And tell me, how does this clay works, is there a special way to work with it? "
" It's really simple to use, cos it doesn't dry with air, but it's hardened just when you cook it in the oven... And it becomes soft while you work on it with hands, maybe cos of their warmth or... "
" Or...? "
" Bah, no, I don't know... "
Holmes smiled and I saw in his eyes that well known expression of someone who found a key to the problem. It was clear to me he found again what he was looking for, that clue that shed light on the facts. While I kept groping in the dark.
" Well, we have to leave for the moment, me and doctor Watson will take a walk in the centre owf the town. We'll meet you again here this evening at nine o' clock. "
In few seconds we were out in the street, while the women we've been talking with about bedrooms and Fimo looked at us from the balcony with a puzzled expression I could, honestly, understand...
