Notte insonne: Uapa ornitologa. - Sleepless night: ornithologist Uapa

Tic toc tic toc tic toc tic toc...

A me è sembrato un cinguettio.
A Roma mi svegliavano sempre.

Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock...
The alarm clock on the bedside table endlessly counts the seconds and I count them too, while a lot of questions fill my head. Too many questions. My crazy questions of the night.

"Why this noise usually helps me to sleep, but tonight us keeping me awake? Why do I itch everywhere? Is it possible to replicate gravity, in space? Why do we have tears when we cry? I mean, why do we leak water from our eyes, as a response to an emotional stimulation? And, above all, how did Steve fall asleep as soon as his head touched the pillow?"

He was tired. Me too, for God's sake. At dinner time I felt all the fatigue of all the week, all of a sudden, and staying awake was such a desperate mission that I'd fall crying on the carpet, to fall asleep on it.
But now, nothing, I'm awake. Another minute. Two more. Five. Ten.
It's cos of the tea. Too strong: "Do you want some more milk in it?" "No, don't worry!".
Tsk, don't worry. And that's the result, it's two hours I'm lying in bed, counting the seconds with the alarm clock and with the clock in the kitchen, that seems its echo.
Helen Keller's book is on the bedside table too, so close, so far: I'm in Steve's hug and he's sleeping so well, and even if I'm so envying him, I don't feel like waking him up too.
Between me and the book, there it is: my mobile phone charging and, suddenly, I don't have any question to ask omniscient Google.
A tweet! Was it a tweet or some door squeaking? It sounded like a tweet to me. But it can't be, cos it's just around 2:00, it's too early and... I wonder at what time do birds start singing... And I wonder if there's a species that starts earlier than the others... Or maybe they start as simply as that, depending on who wakes up first?
Let's see... Focus. It's the first site I find and it's enough for me to like it, cos it's not really easy to read the phone while lying, with your face squashed on the pillow.
The blackbird! Well, yes, it's true. In Rome they would often wake me up. At 4:00, congratulations!
Oh, ok, the one I hear when I go to work is a song thrush.
The robin...
And so I manage to discover that those who wake up earlier have bigger eyes, cos they wake up when it's still dark, cos they eat worms and we all know (do we?) that worms come out from the ground before the sunrise. I'll keep that in mind.
So the wren, the chiffchaff and the blac cap eat insects and they start singing at around 5:00, when flies, mosquitoes and spiders are more active, well well...
And here they are, we only missed those that eat seeds, who wake up at around 6:00, when the sun already rose, so they have smaller eyes, cos the sun is already up in the sky anyway and they can see around.
Good, I found an answer to my question, but I have another question already, although they say that reading helps you relax and fall asleep: why do birds sing so loudly in the morning? Or it's just an impression and they just sound more loud, cos of the silence that surrounds everything?
What makes me happy is that, apparently, I'm not the only crazy sleepless person who thought about it, cos on the same page I find the link to an article called "Why do birds tweet at dawn?".
Cos they're weak. Be aware of that.
When I'm weak cos I just woke up, cos I spent a night without eating, I can't even open the lid of the milk bottle and I have to cry for help to Steve, who has fun, surprised of my miserable sosftness, imagine if I could sing!
But they sing and, according to Focus, they do it to appear cool to the eyes of the females:

"Look at him, even if he's weak cos he didn't eat all night, he still has such a loud voice! I made my choice: he'll be the father of my chicks!"

Oh well, I've always known I'm more like a letargic hedgehog than a sparkling great tit who sings at 4:00 (at 5:00 even, cos they eat insects).
And when does the rooster sing?
Focus doesn't follow me anymore, I'm the only one who ever wondered that, no links to other articles and I have to find another website.

Stupid sensational articles where they announce the world that scientists from Albuquerque's University in Minnesota discovered the rooster doesn't sing cos the sun rises, nor the sun rises cos the rooster sings, what did you think, decades of research to realise that.
Grandmother had a rooster when I was a child, that was nearly as tall as I was. Let's see if I can find a picture of it!
Not this, not this, too small, too white, this is a drawing, this one has a fringe that covers the crown... Tail too short, this other one is too long, drawing, drawing, nearly there, but this one has a green tail, grandmother's one had a barred tail... This one is ALL barred, for God sake! I must say he's cool... But...
The strong temptation of joining a farmers forum to describe grandmother's rooster and know what breed it was is defeated (only slightly) by the curiosity to know more about this other rooster.
An so the night went on like that, until finally a hint of sleepy feeling made my eyelids heavier, I put back the mobile phone on the bedside table and I joined Steve in Morpheus arms.
From last night I learned something more about our feathered friends.
And anyway, if you want cool hens, consider Amrock ones: they're very beautiful, docile and productive.

PS: Albuquerque is not in Minnesota, it's in New Mexico.

Giustificazioni... - Justifications... (2/2)

... But don't you think I just worked during these months!
I also kept travelling, as usual, to England and the first real summer holidays with Steve, of which you'll nearly just see the English part, cos your Uapa, as ever, forgot to take pictures of the Roman week too... During which we also went swimming to the sea ^^

Mum and dad swan let us take a lot of pictures of their cignets, aren't they so sweet? *.*

Ma anche queste ochette sono proprio carine! *.*

But also these little geese are really cute! *.*

English parks are amazing and look like they came out from some painting :-)

Casette adorabili...

Adorable little houses...

... Su una spiaggia di ciottoli :-) ...

... On a pebbles beach :-) ...

... Wonderful beginning of a day at the New Forest, a national park where herds of ponies live free and are absolute owners of the whole territory *.*

Numerous signals remind the visitors that ponies are wild anyway, so it's wise to keep a certain distance, especially from mums and their foals. Respect first of all, here we're just guests :-)

Adoro questi tetti :-D

I adore these rooves :-D

Ponies walk peacefully even in the villages of the area! That's why busier roads (where speed limit is really low anyway) and even gardens of  private houses are protected by proper anti-pony grids, that they find impossible to jump or go through. That's to protect ponies themselves, but also to protect their human neighbours XD

It wouldn't surprise me to see some fairies playing in these woods ;-)

A saperlo prima!!!

And, well, yes, I just have one picture of Rome: the Pantheon! But it's a good one, isn't it? ;-)

I hope you liked this mega photographic diary and I hope to write to you soon, if you'll have the patience of waiting for me and reading me again :-)
A rainbow hug to you all! :-*

Un pezzetto di Estate... - A little bit of Summer...

This year my holiday went from the second half of August to the first days of September, but, although I don't really like that shift, weather was nice and I'm satisfied :-)
So, after a lovely holiday to England, I went to the country... It wasn't really a holiday, cos I had to work in the felds and restoring the house, but I could have some nice walks anyway and bathe (and not bath -_-' ) in the swimming pool or in the sea ^^

Living in the country makes you re-discover a totally different and natural way of being, definitely closer to the rythm and the numerous seasons of nature, that don't care at all about the calendar on your wall. Even a single day has its own time, that doesn't go with normal clock...

... And you can't help setting your biological clock to make it fit this new reality, seeing, feeling and listening to all the many differences that make a day or even an hour different from the previous one, marking a changing, the start of a new phase...

... And so you learn it's time to get up when blue tits start running after each other among the branches, that's going to get dark when nightingales invade the air with their wonderful melodies and that the owls, screaming and singing in the thick darkness among olive trees, will lull your dreams, cos it's time to go to sleep and leave space to all the others creatures of the night...

... Istrici, tassi, lepri, moscardini e volpi diventano presenze costanti lungo la strada...

... Porcupines, badgers, hares, dormouse and foxes are normal presences along the road...

... E, nonostante ciò, continuano a lasciarmi incantata!
... But, even so, they still fascinate me!

A plant giving its fruits after you took care of it is one of the best prizes ever: a long hard job, but it was worth it!

An hawk flying in the warm afternoon reminds you how beautiful is to feel free; the fresh shade of an oak tree makes you discover again how much beauty you can still find in simple things...

... The far call of the pheasant, hiding who knows where in the high grass, makes the silence all around seem even wider, when cicadas stopped filling the fields with their songs and crickets keep their cri-cri for the night...

A ladybird walks peacefully on a little branch; two butterflies fly nervously from one flower to another; a long road of ants works, never stopping, getting things ready for the winter. All these micro-beings remind you there's a micro-world that exists and is full of life. A life with all its rules and all its reasons, even if often one doesn't stop to watch it froma closer point of view. But when that happens, every little thing gains a different meaning.
I think little lilac butterflies prefer flowers of the same colour :-)

XD

By now they already picked wheat since a long time and you can see empty fields alternating with sunflowers, tomatoes and watermelons...

In the dry grass seasonal plants gain a space just for them, and I don't even know how to call them...

... But they're beautiful and they give a different aspect to the edge of every road...

... Ormai i fichi e l'uva cominciano a maturare...

... Figs and grape start to become mature...

... Some closter of blackberries still gives colour to brambles, so, while walking, you also find time to pick some of them to make jam!

I said ciao to bee-eaters and swallows who started moving away (hoping among them there was "our" swift, rescued in spring), while I welcomed Birba's new friends... Oh, she loved her walks on a lead...

... Nonostante siano state davvero stancanti! ;-)

... Although they were also really tiring! ;-)

Dad Nuvola and Mum Mascherina, after studying the situation for a while, introduced us to the rest of their family!

Ed eccoli qui: Soldatino, King e D'Artagnan...

And here they are: Soldatino, King and D'Artagnan...

... Pomata...

... Pomata...

And Mandrake, who, for those who don't know, take their names by a film me and my family consider a "cult" :-D

XD

Unfortunately there was a bad note too: during a visit to the Tagliata Etrusca of Ansedonia, we found out the bridge that took to the Antro della Regina fell off, after a sea storm, but no one (although the promises) ever re-build it again, so now grass is covering all the place. On the other hand, it seems like the ex president of ATAC (yes, the usual Roman public transport service) could buy and restore a manor on the sea, in the archaeological area... At least a "Thank you" to those who helped?! >:-(
Same day, Uapa's right shoulder collided with a handle of the staircase on the rocks, adding a new scar to her collection... XD

Luckily the landscape, the (first) bathe in a calm and transparent sea, the trust a group of seagulls gave us, while we shared a snack with them, and the company of a chatterer, but educated child ( a rare pearl nowadays), really made the day pleasant :-)
I wish I could share it with Dolce!

I know I forgot many things, like green England (diplomatic reasons ;-) ), some nice goats and innumerable corners of Tuscania...
It's hard to find the right end to this post, cos writing the word end to the never ending changing of seasons, getting back to the calendar on the wall, seems by now absurd to me... So, for the moment, I'll show you some sunset pictures, hoping they'll give you the same feelings they gave me :-)

Un abbraccio a tutti! :-*

A hug to you all! :-*

domenica 22 gennaio 2012

Ciao, Pepe :-* - Good bye, Pepe :-*

Sapevo che sarebbe accaduto, me l'aspettavo.
Eppure cerco di farmi forza, perché ora so dove sei e so che stai bene.
... Corri felice sul Ponte dell'Arcobaleno, dolce Pepe! :-*

Sweet love, my blue cat, after many weeks spent looking for you, someone found you near here, gently put on a plastic bag, under the rose near the wall in the garden in front of us. I knew it was going to happen, I expected it. Still hard though.I'm sorry I wasn't close to you when you needed me, I hope you didn't suffer and that, like Steve says, you just fell asleep peacefully.
Thank you for the trust you gave me, trust you gave exclusively to really few people, who really loved you.I'll never forget your big green eyes, your soft silver grey fur, your strong purring and the little watering bubbles you made when you were hungry.
I'll never forget those five crazy minutes that sometimes you had, like every cat, and I'll never forget your soft voice, often only just a whisper that said so many things.I won't forget how good you were in chasing mice, gifts you brought under my window, trying to catch my attention meowing loudly and deeply, until we said "Good girl, Pepe!" .I'm sorry I didn't mantain my promise "If you'll be brave enough to come upstairs, where my flat is, I'll keep you home with me" . You made it, you showed me your courage and tried in every way possible to come in the building, especially during the colder days. Birba would have got used to it, but you wouldn't. You've always lived in the garden, free to go where you wanted to go, whenever you wanted to and you felt trapped even after just few minutes in the stairs of the house. No, already an adult cat, you wouldn't have got used to life in a small flat, I know that. But I'm sorry I didn't keep my promise anyway.
I'm sorry I didn't bury you properly. Rita tried to tell me when she found you, but I was far from Rome, in the country and when I came back, in the evening, you were away already.I'm sorry for that time I trapped you as a traitor in the cage to take you to the vet, to operate you. I was the only person you trusted and you looked at me with such a worried face and I read so much delusion in your eyes, that I still feel guilty. But, believe me, I did it to protect you, cos I know how horrible can be people here with cats and kittens, victims of some cruel psychosis. That time I was really afraid I lost you. But when I took you back and opened the door, you came back to me, raised tail and happy eyes.I'll remember what kind of cuddles you liked: little scratching strokes behind your ears and long shaking strokes on your belly, when you rubbed on my legs, never stopping.
And I'll smile when I'll remember that time you climbed the tree and I couldn't understand from where you were calling me with your little voice. It took me twenty minutes to find you and persuade you to jump down :-D
I'll remember when you came to greet me, not just to ask for food, when I played the sound of my keys, when I called your name, when I just looked at you and even when I tried to hide myself to not make you jump down from your warm place, near the chimney column.
I'll also remember that time when I thought you were dead! You were there, lying on the floor, not moving at all and even if I called you loudly I couldn't wake you up. You didn't even move your ears and I was already running there, desperate. You heard me when I was just a step away from you and you looked at me with a peaceful sleepy face... Now I know your son, Pepetto, took that from you!
I'll always remember how we met, how ferocious you were and how much you changed, at the true beginning of our friendship. Yes, friendship, cos it's true that true friendship has no rules.
And I'll also remember how stubborn you could be, being always so sweet anyway.Pepetto is with Nerino now and I'm sure he won't forget you either. He's a bit more sad since you're gone, but I always stroke him and we always think about you.
Thank you Pepe, for these 15 long years together, that for a stray cat like you are even longer.
You know, I'll  miss you.
But I try to be strong anyway, cos I know where you are now and I know you're fine.
I talked with you about it sometimes and I told your son too. And I talked about it as a real place, cos I know for sure that wonderful place exists, I know, cos I saw it, I've been there.
It costs me a lot to say that, but I know it's a fair beautiful thing, so...
... Run happy on the Rainbow Bridge, sweet Pepe! :-*

Birba fra i fiori - Birba among flowers

I know, I know, I didn't forget about flowers language, but first I need to finish something I left there waiting :-)
Like these little flowers, for example, I made them ages ago and I never used them as I would have liked to!
The first one, that's also my favourite one... Soon it should have a twin with a golden chain!

XD
Detail... To give you an idea of its size, say ok with your hand... Well, more or less, the flowers fits the hole of the O!
XD

Two beads of white agate breaks the brass chain...

Non resistevo, dovevo scattarne un'altra! @'.'@
I couldn't resist, I had to take another picture
@'.'@

The second little bunch of flowers, lilac and purple, with silvery chain... As for the size, same as above... I promise next time I'll try to remember to use a coin to make it easier!
@'.'@

Don't they look like the fat flowers of Smurfs or Bambi? ^^

A little violet bead breaks the silvery chain, I don't call it amethyst, cos I don't know where it comes from. I'll test this necklace for a while, so I'll certainly know if there's nickel in it!

She's Uapita Birba, the most precious little jewel in the house ^^

Io ci ho provato in tutti i modi: luce naturale, luce elettrica, luce diretta, luce soffusa...
I tried so much: natural light, artificial light, direct light, suffused light... Nothing to do about it: I can't manage to show you the true colour of this flower!

Earrings are really simple, like the short chain :-)

Pendant, around the size of a 2€ coin...

... E orecchini :-)
... And earrings :-)

And since we don't want to thow away those scraps chains, even if they're too short, we add some nice bead to them, like pink quartz here, and a hook (even if I need to change it) and here we have our simple earrings :-)

Well, I hope I wasn't too boring with all these pictures and I give you all a hug! :-)
