In terrazza - On the terrace

There's a nice smell in the air, of freshness.
Maybe it's the clean clothes on the bed, waiting to be put away.
It remids me of when we'd do the laundry upstairs, on the terrace.
When we didn't have the wash board and we would take things to be done by hand to the last floor, where we'd wash them in big grey concrete fountains.
Mum would give me some tissues to wash, to make me feel like a little helpful woman and I'd really feel like a "grown up" :-)
First we would thoroughly rub Marseille soap on the clothes, then we would thoroughly rub the clothes on the fountain and finally we would rinse them with care, my favourite part, cos I've always liked playing with water and there I could do it without worrying about making the floor wet, unlike at home!
We would then put the washing on the long line that ran from one side of the big room to the other. The walls were painted in white and pale yellow, and two big long windows occupied the whole lenght of the side walls, making everything look so bright.
The big bed sheets moving in the breeze coming from the windows made me dream: I imagined they hid other worlds, other dimensions, they became cotton labyrinths, and I couldn't wait for the time for them to be taken off the line to be folded up, so I could use the last fold as a swing, so light I was then!
And so much fun with the pegs! I could line them all up and create a lot of rainbows (yes, I was already a rainbow-maniac ^^' ) or I could pretend that each one was a character and I'd invent a thousands stories... It didn't matter if they were coloured plastic or plain wood, in one way or another they could always turn into a new game, cos at the time we'd be inventive, we didn't need at all costs a ready-made toy to play with!
And that scent of the soap in the air... The same of those clothes on the bed, still waiting to be put away in the drawers, oooh let's go... -_-'

Just another little bit of me and my memories back in the past that, I hope, you liked to read...
If you want to take a look to more recent memories, I'll leave you the link to the last article on my second blog (just in Italian), where you'll learn what happens to a Uapa when she parks her 500 to go to work!
A rainbow hug! :-*

ROSA: amore e odio

Il rosa. Parliamone.

- Ma a me piace blu!

Solo una favola? - Just a tale?

Altri ancora furono "graziati" e usati come attrazione turistica.

This story begins a long time ago, in the elegant house of a rich family, where a man lived and worked among other servants. His name was Quintus Euganeus.
Being a servant in a family of the ancient and noble gens Sulpicia was a honour, but a slave was still just a slave: he barely had some rights and his owner had the power of using his life as he wanted to.
Quintus Euganeus was allowed to choose a companion to create a union with. Indeed, at the time where our story happened, slaves weren't allowed to get married and even the contubernio, that's the name of their union, didn't have any legal value. Just many centuries later slaves united by the contubernio conquered the right to not being sold separately, but, anyway, their children would automatically become slaves of the owner of the mother who gave birth to them.
But let's go back to our man.
Among all the others, Quintus Euganeus chose Lilinia, which, cos of her job in the house, was also called Ianuaria by the master: Ianuaria means concierge indeed.
None of them had a proper salary and all their money was made by a little nest egg they made up in the years, thanks to the tips the master and his guests sometimes gave them, kept and accumulated day by day with the hope, at one point, to give them back in change of their freedom.
But one day everything changed, cos in their life happened something that would entirely twist their projects for the future: Lilinia had a baby!
"Maximus, Quintus Maximus, that's the name mum and dad chose for you. It's an important name, a Roman and prestigious name. You don't know that yet, but we had to suffer a lot... We're just slaves and our life has been full of humiliation. But not yours, you must not suffer like us! Your future must be different and people will have to respect you. And, who knows, maybe one day you'll be a free man and you'll wear the toga, like a real free citizen!"
The arrival of a baby is always a happy happening for the parents, but also for all of those who are close to them. And, just like it happens nowadays, also at the time the birth of the child made everyone happy in the house, even the master, who liked him.
Years went by and Quintus Maximus grew up as a smart and brisk boy. He perfectly understood the hopes his mother and his father put in him, and their ambitions became his ambitions too. He began to study with all his heart, obtaining great results at school and for him it was such a good thing he could study.
Even the master was impressed by his capability and so, one day, he decided to free him: since then he would also take the name of his former owner and his name would have been Quintus Sulpicius Maximus.
What a satisfaction for those parents! Their son was now a free man, with an important name that didn't betrayed his humble origin... And how much his life would have changed! Now he would be able to wear a toga, to get married, to vote, all things that slaves weren't allowed to do.
Ok, he wouldn't be able to have public tasks, but his children would be able to, cos they would born from a free man...
But he had a long way in front of him, he was still just a child, and to become someone he had to keep studying, so that he would be able to succeed in something and occupy a place in the society.
The opportunity to emerge arrived soon, when in the city they had the third edition of the Agone, a public feast that was organised every five years, that included literary and musical competitions and horses and gymnastic races.
Quintus Sulpicius Maximus decided to participate to the literary competition.
He would try to win the first prize (that the emperor in person would give to the winner!) against other 52 poets, well, a hard work, and so he dedicated his body and soul to his study, so as not to disappoint his parents expectations. They worked hard and maybe they even used their savings to help and support him, and to make possible for him to start building some bases for a bright future. Maybe they invested those savings that one day they could have used to buy their freedom.
The long awaited day arrived and the little boy, just eleven years old, gave the best of himself, reciting his composition in Greek: 40 lines in which Jupiter scolded Apollo for letting the unskilled Fetonte drive the chariot of the sun.
His little poem didn't win the competition, but it enchanted and conquered so much the judges, that they decided to give him a wreath on merit, as a special prize for his literary skills.
But the joy didn't last much: the effort he puts in too much study mined and weakened the health and the body of Quintus Sulpicius Maximus, who fell ill and died shortly after that.
That wasn't fair.
All the dreams cultivated during the years were nearly becoming true and people in the future would have remembered his name for a long time!
Quintus Euganeus and Lilinia Ianuaria were destroyed by the pain, they couldn't believe everything would end like that.
They would use what was left of their savings, they would pay someone to sculpt a memorial worthy of great aristocrats, that would have stayed visible for centuries.
A memorial made of white marble, with a statue that would represent him wearing a toga, like a free citizen. And with an inscription that would witness the success he had and how much pain his death left in their poor, but proud, parents.
He deserved it, he deserved at least that, after all the effort he put in study and after how much he paid for it.
Yes, posterity would remember him for ever!
A long time passed by and many things happened. The emperor gave order to build walls around the city, threatened by invaders and, slowly, the events regarding this unlucky family fell into oblivion.
The years accumulated and became centuries and the centuries overlapped to become millennia.
In the end of 19th century, nearly two thousand years after our story happened, the city was still there, but everything had changed and it had different needs.
The old walls weren't a protection anymore, but just an obstruction for traffic.
Some parts were broken down and new gaps were opened, and from the excavation emerged testimonies of a past time.
Many findings were damaged or destroyed, by mistake or because they were considered just some useless old things. Others were used again, in a way or another, incorporated in new constructions or recycled as building material. Others were "saved" and used as tourist attraction.
But, what about the memorial to that little young poet? What about the last desperate wish of his parents? Did the gods, which they prayed so much, listened to them and allow them to still have a little space in the mind of posterity, in this future, like they were hoping?
Well, I'll let you judge that...
... But, if one day you'll visit Rome and you'll find yourself walking in the busy Piazza Fiume, find some minutes to stop between the square and Via Piave and then look up to the Aurelian walls.
There, among the ruins, on top of a little column, a little memorial stone made of white marble stands out: between two columns of inscriptions in Latin and Greek, talking about his story and fame, a statue represents a child, who holds a parchment.
That child is Quintus Sulpicius Maximus and he wears a toga, just like a free citizen.

Before it's too late (maybe it's already too late, but anyway...), I'll show you some purely Christmas time things!
Someone requested some gift tags on Christmas theme and I didn't like the idea to make them look all the same, so I had some fun in making them all different, obtaining a great success ^^
They're simple wooden pegs, like those you use to hang the washing, to which I stuck little Fimo clay creations...

So there are some Christmas balls and a Pandoro cake...
The balls are decorated with a silver gel pen, literally copying the drawings on our real Christmas balls!
I put some plaster dust on the Pandoro cake to give the idea of the sugar on it... Next time I must remember to put the glue BEFORE putting the dust -_-

Santa Claus and his reindeer, a gingerbread man, a gift and a slice of Panettone cake...
The reindeer is decorated with some beads; the buttons on the gingerbread man are two orange canes... I love making canes, but if you don't use them in a short time they get ruined, so, get ready, soon I'll post loads of orange creations!

The comet crosses the sky... Down there, in the garden of a little house, a snowman smiles to people passing by... Approaching its little door we're welcomed by a garland... When the door opens, we're surrounded by the warm light of the feast: lovely scents, games, laughter and a lot of children jumping around the Christmas tree, looking forward to open their presents... On the table, ready for dinner, some holly sprigs bring their better wishes for a joiful Night...
Beads, gel pens, glitter glue and nail polish helped me decorating these pegs!

Spero che questi chiudipacco vi siano piaciuti!
Un abbraccio :-*

Midnight is already gone and children are astonished, cos they heard some noises in the other room; Santa Claus has really been there and they have the prooves: heleft here his hat and the poisettia has been moved aside to leave the place for a stocking full of sweets!
Like a last magic, snow starts falling lightly, dusting everything with white and givig the little ones an unforgettable dream...
All the creations are handmade, without molds, apart from the Christmas tree... The ice crystal is made with Transparent Fimo clay and I'm really happy and proud of it... Actually, I still can't believe I could really make it! :-D
I hope you liked these gift tags!
A hug :-*

Notte d'estate - Summer night

In the hot afternoon there were just few people, but now that sun set down, the village changed its look.
The square and the streets that lead there are full of feet clacking on the ground and voices talking and whispering: it's feast tonight!
The accordion, that few steps ago was just a vague breath playing far, now fills the air with its notes and someone is already dancng on the floor. A romantic waltz or a passionate tango, a cheerful polka or a light-hearted mazurka, a latin ball and an exotic melody... Two little girls, with unsure steps, try to imitate the adults, in a curious mix of shyness and cockiness.
Meanwhile, their little friends run between the dance floor and the square, inventing endless games, and their squeals join the music, creating a symphony that has a joyful taste.
The warm light of the illuminations is overcome in many corners by the night, that dyes with darkness the edges of the square, under the trees.
And darkness is accomplice both to younger and older people, so, while guards and thieves, hiders and seekers and princesses ran after each other, between the war memorial and the tables, unleashing the fury of the present dogs, sit up on a wall little women and young knights chase each other's eyes, renewing the ancient and everlasting game of the first love.
Mums, dads, grandparents watch the place all around from the tableful set in a simple way: water, wine and trays full of fry. Its smell envelopes the square and the streets, giving way, at the start of the feast, to the sweet fragrance of cotton candy and sweets, to relish while walking among the stands and the lottery desk.
A group of friends are laughing and teasing each other loudly, in front of a beer , bad thoughts out of their minds.
Sitting on a bench a mum gently pushes a stroller: it's already bedtime for someone and his dreaming eyes slowly close on the full square. Full of life, of people, of lights, of colours and scents, full of music.
A light breeze moves the flag on the town hall's window.
Meanwhile the moon stays still in the clean sky of this summer night and maybe it's watching all that happens here, in this village...

Any village, July the 28th of any year.

Budini! - Dessert Puddings!

Un giorno, al palazzo di Versailles...
One day, at the Versailles palace...

Ciao a tutti!
XD

Hello all!
Today I'll show you the first of a long series of dessert puddings: panna cotta (Nutella flavoured, of course *.*), creme caramel, coffee flavoured and classic chocolate flavoured!
And finally I found a place for my mini furniture and for the little cupboard I found! :-D
The Veirsailles palace is just a decorated box!
XD

I budini sono realizzati in Fimo...
The dessert puddings are made with Fimo clay...

... Così come Maria Antonietta e Sailor Moon...
... Like Marie Antoinette and Sailor Moon... Ok, they're not as good, but they're ok for me XD

This time I remembered to use a coin to show you the size of these little creations ;-)

And here you have the dessert puddings, stuck on magnet pegs on the fridge, waiting to be adopted :-)

Come sempre spero vi siano piaciuti questi lavoretti! Un abbraccio :-*
As ever I hope you liked these little wrks! A hug :-*

Sola?

- When offices are still empty...

"Ultima stanza, in fondo a sinistra!"
Uscendo mi do un ultimo sguardo attorno.

If I think about it, it makes me shiver.
From documents you can see this building was already here in 1650, when many people were still hanged, even there at that corner, where they used to build a place for that.
I walk in the dim light of the long corridor and silence is broken just from the sound of my heels on the parquet.
"Last door, end of the corridor on the right!" I think aloud, a sentence I said so many times that now I seem a recorded voice. Some steps more, I enter the big room and I feel even more out of the world, behind its double doors.
The window is half open and I can see Via del Corso through it: even during the quiet hours of the morning it's full of ponies delivering their parcels, curious tourists (with bags so full of things you'd say they're starting a trip around the world, while they'll probably just stop at the Coloseum), ambulant sellers ready to run away when they see a policeman in the distance, shops assistants tidying shops windows, noisy students, simple people passing by (maybe employee of some office near here or even just people living here who go food shopping with their dog), a carriage trotting to reach the working location, and imagine how cool it was when people still used carriages in Rome... And above their heads sparrows, pigeons and seagulls make the air as busy as the streets.
I close the window and I'm wrapped in silence again: the lively pulsing of the Street stays out, while it seems like in this big room there are just ghosts of that life that's happening down there, behind the blinds.
Yes, they must be here. Every ancient building has its ghost and this one must have its own ones.
Made up ladies, wearing pompous damask dresses, decorated with ribbons and laces, show jewels full of gems and pearls, and they maliciously hide their face behind precious fans, sending secret messages to their partners, who like to play the game, proud of their powdered wigs... The little orchestra spreads its music around, among laughters and sighs of the guests, and in the warm light of the candelabra, from where cristal grapes hang over.
I'm sure about it: they're here, floating around, waiting to clean away the dust and the webs that oppressed them for centuries and to find someone to show themselves to, one day or another.
But that day is not today and that someone is not me.
Going out I take another look around.
I know they're there, looking back at me from the enourmous ancient mirrors on the walls, darkened by the time passing and framed by marbles and stucco.
I know for sure they're there and they're just waiting for me to go away, to keep dancing their dances, forever reflected in those mirrors.
"Ok, fine... No meetings today here in the hall!"
The only answer I get is the empty resound of my voice.
I sigh, close the door behind me and by now it's already time to start my working shift...
... You have a nice day too, ghosts of the Mirrors Hall!

Cavolate.
"A Federi'!
"ARIT, buongiorno...!"

Good, really lovely to start the day like this.
It's not enough to work in a nearly deserted office.
I also just discovered the parcel I sent Steve is damaged.
"... Of course, with Quick Pack Europe your parcel, with insurance, will arrive there in 3 working days!"
Yes, yes. Five days later it was still in Milan and it arrived in England just yesterday. And now it's stuck somewhere there, cos it's "damaged". For God sake, not Steve's parcel, bloody service!!!
That's it: this is the last time I send something with Poste Italiane. Thinking back to all the things I sent, parcels and letters, the number of lost/damaged things is higher than the number of those that actually arrived where I sent them. And if someone wants to send me something, I'll ask them to use a private service, otherwise it'll be their own responsibility if the parcel will be lost.
Steve's parcel is damaged. Of all parcels THAT one is damaged. And it happened here in Italy. During the 5 days that took it  to reach Milan from Rome. Probably carried by a heroic postman who ran on his own feet for all those kilometres, holding my yellow box in his arms. Oh poor, poor postman, they should give him a medal.
I had this news from a girl working at the helping phone service of Poste Italiane. Nice as a bunch of nettle in the pants.
I understand working these days is annoying. But I'm a receptionist too!
I get up from my desk to see if there's some open window, I'm freezing and the summer uniform (yes, cos our winter one is lost somewhere too) doesn't help.
I walk in front of our president's room: crystal bowls full of the best chocolate sweets, his own heating, comfortable armchair, enviable salary, but, above all, tens of parcels everywhere. And he doesn't even want them!
That's enough.
I walk quickly in the room, without even knocking at the door, impulsively.
I stand in front of his desk, decisively hitting it with my hands.
I'm really mad.
I raise my head and look up and finally I explode, shouting without control, saying all I have in my mind.
I shout.
About how comfortable is to give orders to people and behave like a skeptical supervisor, while everyone working for you is running all day to do things they shouldn't even do.
About how easy is to criticize people arriving few minutes late, cos they're trapped in the bus or in the subway, when you have a chauffeur always ready for you.
About how absurd is to judge who secretly eats a bit of a cracker, while you're free to go out and fill your stomach at the restaurant round the corner, paid by the company.
And about how unfair, yes, UNFAIR! is that his parcels are never lost anywhere and in any case! Those gift that just bother him, while my gift for Steve was awaited so much from us both!
"And you really don't know who I am! Probably you never noticed, if not to moan about that time I didn't greet you, cos I was busy holding the phone and other four receivers at the same time. No, you don't know who I am! I'm your receptionist and I'd really like to know who'd lead all your precious calls to your secretary, who can't even smoke a cigarette in peace! I wonder who'd give you a new fresh bottle of mineral water every morning, if I didn't do that! And your plants would be dead since a long time, if I didn't take care of them every single day!!!"
Now I'm a bit more relaxed, I could let out all of what I had inside, all those things that many people in the office wouldn't even brave enough to think.
Someone heard me shouting and came at the door:
"Hey Fed! Talking alone? Come on, get out from president's room, I need to make some space to deliver more parcels...!"
More parcels. I knew it. It's not fair!
But phone starts ringing again and I, as a good receptionist, have to answer...
I get out from the empty room of our president, recovering from the delusion/illusion of really talking to him...
"ARIT, good morning...!"

Sherlock Holmes e il Caso della Crema Idratante... (2/2) - Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Moisturizing Cream... (2/2)

Tutti ci girammo sorpresi verso di lei.

" Ma...!
Cosa dice?! Come può accusare proprio me?! "
" Vuole forse negare l'evidenza e addossare la colpa a qualcun altro? "

" Come i raggi di una ruota? "
" Esatto, Watson! "
" Dunque quel brattolo deve essere caduto in verticale... "
" No, certo che no. Ma lo aveva lavorato durante il giorno. Ricorda?

" Good heavens, Holmes, why wasting time talking about earrings and beds, instead of investigating around the mystery of the jar?! "
" My dear Watson, try to not think about it and relax, now I solved the case! "
" You solved it? What do you mean?! "
" Oh it's all so clear, my friend! The daughter, Miss Uapa, the one who makes Fimo earrings, was the last person leaving the room... "
" Yes, after she opened the window... Do you think someone could enter the room by the window and... "
" Really, Watson, now just enjoy this walk in the eternal city and this evening I'll explain everything. I just need to collect some other information... You'll see things are much more simple than you can imagine! "
I was tormented by curiosity, cos, knowing Holmes, I was well aware he glimpsed that very detail I couldn't see.
Anyway I decided to follw his advice and soon in my mind there was just space for the wonder I felt while walking among those ancient architectures, getting on so well with the most modern buildings.
Several times Holmes dragged me in fine arts shops to look for Fimo. I wondered if he was suddenly interested in handicrafts, but it was such crazy an idea that I abandoned it immediately.
Time ran away quickly and at nine o'clock, as we agreed, we were all in the dining room of the flat again.
" Good, my ladies, as I promised, I'm going to reveal the name of the culprit. Miss Uapa, how and why did you exchange the two jars? "
We all turned in her direction, with astonished faces.
" But...! What are you saying?! How can tell it was me?! "
" Do you mean you want to deny the evidence and blame someone else? "
The girl sighed, leaning her back on the windowsill.
" Ok, I admit it, it was my fault. Yesterday night, as ever, I closed the door of the dining room and I went to bed, but once under the blankets I realised my hands were so dry I couldn't bear them. My mother and Birba were already sleeping, so I got up very slowly to not wake them up and, since my hand cream was finished, I thought I'd used my grandmother's cream, that's also more efficacious by the way. "
" But something went wrong, after you took the cream you needed, right? "
" Yes, you're right. I wanted to close the jar before spreading the cream to not make it greasy... So I decided to put on the lid with my left hand, that was still clean, while I held the jar between my right wrist and my hip, since my right hand was by now already dirty with cream. But I couldn't manage to screw that thing in the right way anymore and the lid was always left crooked! "
" Until you, after trying and trying, lost the grip on the jar and let it fall, breaking it. "
" Yes. I couldn't imagine... It was made of plastic, I didn't expect it to break! But when I bowed to pick it up I saw it broke exactly in two parts and the cream was all spread on the floor! For a while I panicked, then I realised all around me reigned silence: to my relief the noise didn't wake up anyone. I started reasoning on what to do... "
" Cos you couldn't really clean and throw away all that cream, wasting it, could you? "
" No, I couldn't. You know, I love boxes and any sort of container, so I remembered I kept an old plastic jar where once there was hair balm, the one you can all see here. I went oin my grandmother's room on tiptoe, closing the door carefully to not make any noise. Then, always in absolute silence, I started removing the bags under the little table to open the wooden case where I keep all those things that one day could be of some use, among which there was also this very jar. I nearly had a heart attack when my grandmother turned in her sleep, I layed flat on the floor and I crawled away like a marines, so as not to be discovered and risk her to scream some question that would have wakened up all the house! I didn't want mum to be horrified by the show of the dining room's floor now so dirty and I didn't want Lori to clean it in my place, charging herself with another job too. "
" So you went in the kitchen, took a spoon and, back in the dining room, you tried to save what you could, you put what was left of the cream in the 'new' jar and cleaned the remains with a paper towel. "
" Yes, that's what happened. But believe me, I acted in good faith. "
" Well. I think we cleared up the matter now and we can all go back to our everyday's life. Good evening, my ladies! "
My friend ran downstairs and, after saying good bye to the Roman family - by now relaxed, for they discovered the truth - I ran downstairs too to reach him.
" Holmes, wait one moment! Holmes...! How could you discover all of that? I must admit once again I can't understand...! "
" Remember when I leaned to talk with Mrs Clara? There was a dirty spot on the floor there, some sort of stripes were evident, probably caused by a superficial attent of cleaning some greasy substance, just like a moisturizing cream. Surely the original jar fell down, spreading its content all around. And what's the point in exchanging the jars, if the former one isn't damaged? That very cream is actually really good, it couldn't be wasted. The little scratches on the floor there demonstrate someone used a metallic spoon to collect it, while this... " the detective said, taking a little corner of absorbing paper from the pocket of his overcoat " ... tells me the last tracks were removed with a paper towel, took from the almost new roll in the kitchen. "
" But how do you know it was Miss Uapa to make it fall down? And not Miss Lori or Birba? "
" As Miss Uapa herself admitted, she was, as ever, the last person who left the dining room and stayed awake all the time. And think about it, Watson, if it was Birba hitting it, the jar would have fallen on one side, causing the content spreading just in one direction. But in our case, you can clearly see from the greasy marks that the cream shoot out everywhere, covering a quite rounded area of the floor, extended from the centre of the circle to the external part of it."
" Like the spokes of a wheel? "
" Exactly, Watson! "
" So that jar must have fallen vertically... "
" Yes. And don't forget Miss Uapa then was the only one in extreme need of that very cream. Did you know, my friend, that old Fimo can be treated easily with the help of a hand cream? "
" But... What does that have to do with it...? Miss Uapa didn't have to work with Fimo at night... "
" No, of course not. But she worked with it during the day. Remember? She told us that ' It becomes softer with the warmth of the hands or... ' "
" Or...? "
" Or with the natural grease of hands, that, after working with that clay, become dry and mealy, annoying sensation that just an appropriate moisturizing cream can relieve and repair. "
" So Miss Uapa herself was going to tell you, but she preferred not give you this hint?! "
" I think so... Anyway... Look! "
And saying that he took a little package of polymeric clay from his pocket.
" Fimo? "
" Exactly! I can't wait to thoroughly analyze its chemical composition to learn more about it! Let's go, Watson, a long day awaits us tomorrow: we go back to Baker Street! " .
